Happy Birthday & Thanks to all of us!

by cv harquail on May 23, 2010

It’s a special day! AuPairMom is celebrating its 2nd Birthday!

For two years, with 370 posts, 9,000+ comments, and 46,000 visitors, we’ve been pooling our wisdom to make the experience of hosting an Au Pair and being an Au Pair better and better.

In the olden days, there were no cluster meetings for host parents.
If you were lucky, one of your friends or neighbors was or had been a host parent, and could help you if you got stuck or were confused or doubting yourself, and maybe a helpful counselor could help out when there was an emergency. … But for day to day issues, scary questions, griping, inside info, and all the rest? You were on your own.

It was you, your au pair, and your best intentions.

Back when I started AuPairMom.com, there was literally nothing online to help host parents. There were agency sites with information you could download, a few mom-community bulletin boards with occasional exchanges of basic information or crisis counseling, but nowhere that parents could pool their resources to keep each other from making the same mistakes over and over.

It’s a completely different world now. I can’t tell you the number of times someone has shared how something someone wrote in the comments or in a post helped them see their situation more clearly, and respond more effectively. We are all better host parents now than we were, and we’ve all gotten better faster, and more mindfully, because of the ways we’ve been sharing with each other.

Thank you to all of you parents, au pairs, counselors, and friends for being part of this blog.

It’s your questions, your insights, and your generosity with each other that make this blog matter, and help us all make a difference.

Happy 2nd Birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY APM! Through good HFs and bad HFs and all sort of scenarios, this website has helped me SO much and I hope I’m a better au pair from reading.

Happy Birthday! Thanks for sticking with this. It has helped me get through my first two disaster au pair situations and gave me the encouragement to keep trying. Now I am nearing the end of our first full year with an au pair who has been fantastic. We are close to matching with our “second” (we don’t count the first two) au pair and thanks to this site we have done a much better job in the selection process. Thanks so much CV!

Hey CV, happy birthday! The video is precious, and I love the dog’s bark as if on cue!

You deserve amazing kudos for this site, your tireless devotion, your sympathetic objectivity and your ability to elicit and expand on reader participation. Have I missed anything? :)

Take care, but don’t rest on your laurels now! We still expect great things from you in the year to come!

Happy Birthday APM…love this site and all I have learned over this – our 1st year – of Hosting an AP. I have learned so much and have even shared alot with my LCC – who I think might even be a reader now and is a HM herself…it has also made the selection process for our 2nd AP easier…We are not alone…we are here for each other and knowing this makes it all much easier. GREAT JOB…keep it up !

Thank you , CV, for volunteering your time and helping make all of us better host parents! Thank you to all of the contributors – I read every post and have learned so much from all of your thoughtful, specific and honest comments.

Happy (belated) birthday, APM. And huge thanks to CV for all the hard work.

It was 2 years ago when my husband and I started the AP process and yes, there was next to nothing out there. While I wish I had been able to use this resource when picking (and dealing with) our first (and short-lived) AP, the tips I have gotten now help all the time in working with our current AP and in seeing how things were handled with the first one (and knowing the writing was on the wall no matter how many hoops I tried to jump through for her). Thanks to everyone for making this an awesome site!
